In 2021, the African calcareous building stone market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, calcareous building stone exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 56%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Togo prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), committing an 8.9% share of total exports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the calcareous building stone exports, with a CAGR of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021. Benin (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Benin saw its share reduced by -25.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest calcareous building stone supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Benin totaled $X per ton.

In 2021, purchases abroad of calcareous building stone increased by 183% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, calcareous building stone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Ghana was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 72% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), generating a 24% share of total imports.
