The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, calcium carbonate exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Egypt dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+71.7%), South Africa (+18.9%) and Kenya (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+30 p.p.), South Africa (+1.7 p.p.) and Mali (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-34.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest calcium carbonate supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 3.4% share.

In Egypt, calcium carbonate exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+10.7% per year) and Tunisia (-13.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of calcium carbonate were imported in Africa; picking up by 1.6% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, calcium carbonate imports dropped to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 27%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Algeria (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented the key importers of calcium carbonate, together generating 67% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to calcium carbonate imports into Algeria stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+16.1%), Libya (+15.9%), Angola (+13.8%), Kenya (+13.2%), South Africa (+10.3%), Ghana (+8.2%), Morocco (+4.2%), Uganda (+3.0%) and Tanzania (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+5.8 p.p.), Libya (+5.1 p.p.), South Africa (+4.1 p.p.), Kenya (+2.1 p.p.) and Angola (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria and Algeria saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -8.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest calcium carbonate importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 35% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Angola, Libya, Tanzania and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 43%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 49%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
