At the same time, Mozambique (+55.0%), Tanzania (+37.3%), Tunisia (+3.5%) and Egypt (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mozambique (+23 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.7 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-25.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 89% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +42.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, calendars and trade advertising material export price increased by +95.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
