The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canary seed exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a 5.1% share of total exports.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the canary seed exports, with a CAGR of -11.3% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest canary seed supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to -13.1%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

Canary seed imports amounted to X tons in 2022, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canary seed imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Algeria (X tons), distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Libya (X tons) were the main importers of canary seed, together creating 95% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Tunisia, Libya and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Among the main importing countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
