In 2021, the amount of candles and tapers exported in Africa reduced to X tons, which is down by -9.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 13%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, candles and tapers exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of candles and tapers, mixing up 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons), together generating a 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Rwanda (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to candles and tapers exports from South Africa stood at -10.2%. At the same time, Zambia (+52.2%), Lesotho (+26.0%) and Rwanda (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +52.2% from 2012-2021. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uganda (-21.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+21 p.p.), Lesotho (+7.5 p.p.), Tunisia (+4.5 p.p.) and Rwanda (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Uganda and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -12.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest candles and tapers supplier in Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 16% share.
In South Africa, candles and tapers exports shrank by an average annual rate of -10.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+54.9% per year) and Tunisia (-0.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of candles and tapers decreased by -22.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Benin (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Congo (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 31% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Madagascar, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Congo, Botswana, Gambia and Swaziland, which together accounted for a further 39%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +24.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
