In value terms, carbon brush production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of carbon brushes exported in Africa soared to X tons, rising by 23% against the previous year. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +8.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 61%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, carbon brush exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 171% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 67% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Nigeria (5.7%). Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon brush exports from South Africa stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Nigeria (+18.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-3.4%) and Egypt (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Nigeria increased by +18 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest carbon brush supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports. Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.2%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +9.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 68%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Carbon Brush Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of carbon brushes imported in Africa surged to X tons, growing by 38% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, carbon brush imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Tunisia (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the major importers of carbon brushes in 2021, finishing at approx. 33% and 22% of total imports, respectively. South Africa (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +37.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest carbon brush importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Tunisia ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +27.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
