The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbon dioxide exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporter of carbon dioxide in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. Kenya (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons). All these countries together took near 46% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon dioxide exports from South Africa stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+80.7%) and Tanzania (+14.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +80.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-1.4%), Egypt (-5.3%) and Swaziland (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+9.8 p.p.), South Africa (+8.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kenya, Swaziland and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -4.8% and -11.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest carbon dioxide supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Kenya ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together comprising 66% of total exports. Egypt, Nigeria and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +46.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 12%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of carbon dioxide in Africa rose rapidly to X tons, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.7% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, carbon dioxide imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the key importers of carbon dioxide in 2022, accounting for near 22% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Zimbabwe (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Zambia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together took near 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Ghana (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +71.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbon dioxide importing markets in Africa were Zimbabwe ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique, Ghana, Namibia, Guinea, Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +37.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
