In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in the African plastic bottle market, when its value decreased by -37% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics, making up 37% of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Egypt (20%) and Uganda (9.2%). Morocco (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2020 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +378.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mauritius ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 84% of total exports. Uganda, Morocco, Nigeria and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +377.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+17.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics, which increased by 40% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a significant increase from 2020 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +34.4% over the last two-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Morocco (13%), Tunisia (7.1%), South Africa (7%) and Tanzania (6.9%). Benin (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2020 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+37.5%), Benin (+28.2%), Burkina Faso (+24.7%) and Tanzania (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2020-2022. Botswana and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-50.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2020 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Tunisia and Botswana increased by +13, +7.1 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest plastic bottle importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports. Tunisia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Benin and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Benin, with a CAGR of +48.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2020 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +9.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
