Morocco (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Morocco (13%), Tunisia (7.1%), South Africa (7%) and Tanzania (6.9%). Benin (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2020 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+37.5%), Benin (+28.2%), Burkina Faso (+24.7%) and Tanzania (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2020-2022. Botswana and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-50.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2020 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Tunisia and Botswana increased by +13, +7.1 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest plastic bottle importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports. Tunisia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Benin and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Benin, with a CAGR of +48.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
