Trailer And Semi-Trailer Market Size in Africa

The African trailer and semi-trailer market expanded notably to $X in 2022, picking up by 9.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +91.5% against 2014 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of cargo trailers and semi-trailers exported in Africa soared to X units, surging by 29% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +67.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the largest exporter of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, creating 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X units), creating a 10% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cargo trailers and semi-trailers exports, with a CAGR of -3.5% from 2012 to 2022. Tunisia (-6.9%) and Kenya (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+6.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-5.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest trailer and semi-trailer supplier in Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 3.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +6.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-10.1% per year) and Tunisia (-15.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, falling by -10.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, trailer and semi-trailer export price decreased by -20.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Kenya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Imports

Imports in Africa

Trailer and semi-trailer imports rose markedly to X units in 2022, with an increase of 14% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 69%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X units), followed by Togo (X units), Nigeria (X units), Egypt (X units), Mozambique (X units), Algeria (X units), Zambia (X units) and Botswana (X units) represented the main importers of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, together generating 57% of total imports. Niger (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Namibia (X units), Kenya (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +38.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest trailer and semi-trailer importing markets in Africa were Tanzania ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Zambia ($X), together accounting for 29% of total imports. Algeria, Egypt, Mozambique, Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Togo and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +12.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -4.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+19.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
