Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of carrots and turnips decreased by -7.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, carrot and turnip imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of carrots and turnips, namely Somalia, Senegal, Mauritania and Uganda, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), constituting an 8.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - each reached a 5.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carrot and turnip importing markets in Africa were Senegal ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Somalia ($X), together comprising 56% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Uganda, Ghana and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +33.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 4.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
