Casein And Caseinates Market Size in Africa

The African casein and caseinates market rose notably to $X in 2022, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, casein and caseinates production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of casein and caseinates decreased by -5.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 144%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, casein and caseinates exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), achieving an 8.2% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uganda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the casein and caseinates exports, with a CAGR of +53.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uganda (+84 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-2.3 p.p.) and South Africa (-39.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the largest casein and caseinates supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

In Uganda, casein and caseinates exports expanded at an average annual rate of +74.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-1.0% per year) and Kenya (+12.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, casein and caseinates export price increased by +65.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of casein and caseinates increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -6.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, casein and caseinates imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +125.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total imports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Egypt (7%), Gambia (6.2%) and Nigeria (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +90.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest casein and caseinates importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. Tunisia, Egypt, Nigeria and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Among the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +106.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, casein and caseinates import price increased by +73.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
