In general, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 238% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 85%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporter of wood boxes, crates and cable drums in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 42% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Morocco (12%), Egypt (8.5%), Tanzania (5.9%) and Mozambique (5.9%). Nigeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+62.3%), Botswana (+28.9%), Morocco (+26.2%) and Egypt (+22.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +62.3% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-32.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Botswana, Morocco, Egypt, Mozambique and Tanzania increased by +17, +16, +11, +8.1, +5.9 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest wood box and cable drum supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 66% share of total exports. Tanzania, Nigeria, Mozambique and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +47.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of wood boxes, crates and cable drums increased by 21% to X units in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Tunisia was the major importer of wood boxes, crates and cable drums in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 48% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), Botswana (X units) and South Africa (X units), together making up a 32% share of total imports. Egypt (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Algeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood box and cable drum imports into Tunisia stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Morocco (+12.4%), Nigeria (+7.7%) and Botswana (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012-2022. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-1.2%) and Egypt (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+9.9 p.p.) and Tunisia (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-2.3 p.p.) and Egypt (-2.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood boxes, crates and cable drums in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco stood at +8.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-0.4% per year) and Egypt (+13.9% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -17.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
