The African cauliflower and broccoli market was estimated at $X in 2022, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -5.7% against 2020 indices. Cauliflower And Broccoli Production in Africa
In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 50%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Algeria (X tons) remains the largest cauliflower and broccoli producing country in Africa, comprising approx. 53% of total volume. Moreover, cauliflower and broccoli production in Algeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Morocco (X tons), with a 13% share.
In Algeria, cauliflower and broccoli production increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-3.7% per year) and Morocco (-0.5% per year).
The average cauliflower and broccoli yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the cauliflower and broccoli yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of cauliflower and broccoli in Africa shrank slightly to X ha, falling by -1.7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cauliflower and broccoli production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa
Cauliflower and broccoli exports reduced sharply to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -20.6% on the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
Egypt represented the major exporter of cauliflower and broccoli in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 38% of total exports in 2022. Kenya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by South Africa (18%), Morocco (17%) and Burkina Faso (5.9%). Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cauliflower and broccoli exports from Egypt stood at +15.7%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+75.3%), Morocco (+71.8%), Tunisia (+29.8%) and Kenya (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +75.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Morocco, Burkina Faso and Tunisia increased by +20, +17, +5.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest cauliflower and broccoli supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), Kenya ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 88% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +90.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 63%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cauliflower And Broccoli Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of cauliflower and broccoli was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mauritania (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented the major importers of cauliflower and broccoli in 2022, resulting at approx. 22% and 20% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together generating a 23% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mauritania (with a CAGR of +64.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Mozambique ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Mauritania, South Africa, Mauritius, Swaziland, Seychelles, Lesotho, Cabo Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
Mauritania, with a CAGR of +51.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
