The African market for caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after five years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes, when their volume decreased by -88.1% to X tons. In general, exports saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 329% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 84%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes, making up 48% of total exports. Egypt (X kg) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Guinea (X kg) and Tunisia (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 51% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports from South Africa stood at -8.2%. At the same time, Guinea (+347.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +347.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-5.8%) and Tunisia (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+48 p.p.) and Guinea (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -7.3% and -21.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes supplying countries in Africa were Guinea ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports.
Guinea, with a CAGR of +330.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 477% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed measured growth. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+20.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes were imported in Africa; with an increase of 43% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +98.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Egypt was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 59% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (4.7%). The following importers - Seychelles (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.7% share of total imports.
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Seychelles (+33.5%), Cameroon (+21.0%), Morocco (+8.1%) and Mauritius (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+8.3 p.p.) and Seychelles (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Mauritius ($X), together accounting for 86% of total imports. These countries were followed by Seychelles, Cameroon and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, which together accounted for a further 3.3%.
Seychelles, with a CAGR of +39.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
