Cement Clinker Market Size in Africa
The African cement clinker market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Cement Clinker Production in Africa
In value terms, cement clinker production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Cement Clinker Exports
Exports in Africa
For the seventh year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of cement clinker, which increased by 4.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 100% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cement clinker exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 116%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the major exporter of cement clinker in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 51% of total exports in 2022. Algeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Morocco (12%), Togo (6.6%) and Tunisia (6.2%). The following exporters - Senegal (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - each reached a 4.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cement clinker exports from Egypt stood at +55.3%. At the same time, Tunisia (+59.5%), Algeria (+52.8%), Senegal (+33.9%), Morocco (+23.1%) and South Africa (+21.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +59.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+47 p.p.), Algeria (+13 p.p.) and Tunisia (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Togo saw its share reduced by -51.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest cement clinker supplier in Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 11% share.
In Egypt, cement clinker exports increased at an average annual rate of +57.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Algeria (+51.1% per year) and Morocco (+23.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 7.7%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Cement Clinker Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of cement clinker decreased by -22.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, cement clinker imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented roughly 42% of total imports in 2022. Cameroon (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Guinea (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Uganda (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Benin (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cameroon ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Uganda, Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Algeria, Benin, Senegal, Mauritania, Togo and Gabon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +26.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Gabon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
