Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -37.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ceramic household article exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest exporters of ceramic household articles and toilet articles in Africa, together achieving 71% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Egypt (10%). Rwanda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +98.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 88% of total exports. These countries were followed by Morocco and Rwanda, which together accounted for a further 8.1%.

Among the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +57.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of ceramic household articles and toilet articles in Africa reached X tons, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic household article imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Libya (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented the major importers of ceramic household articles and toilet articles, together committing 61% of total imports. Senegal (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ceramic household article imports into South Africa stood at -2.1%. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+31.4%), Senegal (+15.8%), Cameroon (+12.6%), Algeria (+8.2%), Ghana (+6.2%) and Tanzania (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +31.4% from 2012-2021. Sudan and Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-3.3%), Morocco (-3.4%), Angola (-10.4%) and Nigeria (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cameroon (+3.7 p.p.), Algeria (+3.3 p.p.), Senegal (+2.9 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.4 p.p.), Ghana (+2.1 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco, South Africa, Angola and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -2%, -5.3% and -18.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest ceramic household article importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together comprising 30% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Senegal, Sudan, Ghana, Cameroon, Morocco, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Angola and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +37.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, ceramic household article import price increased by +100.9% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
