Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic statuette exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Morocco was the main exporter of ceramic statuettes and other ornamental articles in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 54% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Tunisia (10%). Egypt (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ceramic statuette exports from Morocco stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Egypt (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-19.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+24 p.p.), South Africa (+9.9 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -33.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest ceramic statuette supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 93% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +0.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of ceramic statuettes and other ornamental articles increased by 20% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic statuette imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importer of ceramic statuettes and other ornamental articles in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 37% of total imports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by Morocco (6.1%) and Angola (5.4%). The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ceramic statuette imports into South Africa stood at -6.4%. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+39.6%), Ethiopia (+21.3%), Mali (+15.2%), Senegal (+11.0%), Botswana (+10.1%) and Tanzania (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.6% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Gabon (-1.7%), Morocco (-2.5%), Algeria (-6.1%), Egypt (-8.7%) and Angola (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Morocco, Mali, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Senegal, Botswana and Namibia increased by +7.7, +2.7, +2.2, +2, +1.9, +1.9, +1.7 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ceramic statuettes and other ornamental articles in Africa, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, ceramic statuette imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+5.8% per year) and Egypt (-5.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 25%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Gabon ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
