Ceramic Tile Market Size in Africa

The African ceramic tile market fell to $X in 2022, waning by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Ceramic Tile Production in Africa

In value terms, ceramic tile production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of ceramic tiles exported in Africa expanded remarkably to X square meters, growing by 12% compared with the previous year. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, ceramic tile exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 73%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, amounting to X square meters, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X square meters) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (5.3%) and Ghana (4.6%). Tunisia (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+82.3%) and Ghana (+53.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +82.3% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Zimbabwe and Ghana increased by +5.5, +5.3 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest ceramic tile supplier in Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt stood at -10.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+2.2% per year) and Ghana (+46.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per square meter), while Zimbabwe ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of ceramic tiles in Africa shrank to X square meters, which is down by -7.4% against the year before. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic tile imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X square meters), followed by Libya (X square meters), Morocco (X square meters), Senegal (X square meters), Cameroon (X square meters) and Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters) were the main importers of ceramic tiles, together comprising 44% of total imports. Nigeria (X square meters), Ghana (X square meters), Algeria (X square meters), Mozambique (X square meters), Somalia (X square meters), Angola (X square meters) and Tanzania (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Somalia (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ceramic tile importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Libya ($X), together comprising 29% of total imports. Nigeria, Algeria, Senegal, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Angola, Mozambique, Tanzania and Somalia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +20.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2022, picking up by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
