Cereal Germ Market Size in Africa
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the African cereal germ market, when its value decreased by -0.6% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Cereal Germ Production in Africa
In value terms, cereal germ production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of cereal germ were exported in Africa; rising by 1.7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 134%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cereal germ exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 106%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Uganda dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Uganda increased at an average annual rate of +59.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+60.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uganda increased by +14 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the largest cereal germ supplier in Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uganda stood at +62.0%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 8% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Uganda stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+1.6%).

Imports in Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of cereal germ was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,239% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cereal germ imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 438%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kenya dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 76% of total imports in 2021. Uganda (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 10% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cereal germ imports into Kenya stood at +40.3%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+58.4%), South Africa (+6.4%) and Uganda (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +58.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lesotho (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kenya and Zimbabwe increased by +64 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cereal germ in Africa, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 3.6% share.
In Kenya, cereal germ imports expanded at an average annual rate of +59.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uganda (+7.5% per year) and South Africa (+5.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
