Other Cereals Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the African other cereals market, when its value decreased by -4% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Other Cereals Production in Africa

In value terms, other cereals production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Ethiopia (X tons) remains the largest other cereals producing country in Africa, accounting for 80% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Guinea (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Ethiopia amounted to +5.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Guinea (+2.7% per year) and Chad (+0.7% per year).

In 2021, the average other cereals yield in Africa declined to X tons per ha, remaining constant against 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 6.5%. Over the period under review, the other cereals yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the other cereals harvested area in Africa reduced slightly to X ha, stabilizing at 2020 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 8.2% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, exports of other cerealses in Africa contracted markedly to X tons, dropping by -45.9% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals exports declined to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +42.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Uganda (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the key exporters of other cerealses, together generating 81% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +119.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Uganda ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 74% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +162.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+19.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Other Cereals Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of other cerealses were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -78.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 339% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 286%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kenya represented the key importer of other cerealses in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Burundi (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together constituting a 25% share of total imports. The following importers - South Africa (X tons), Niger (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total imports.

Imports into Kenya increased at an average annual rate of +22.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+209.6%), Gabon (+49.8%), Burundi (+24.1%), Niger (+22.1%), Ghana (+15.3%) and South Africa (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +209.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (+30 p.p.), Burundi (+7.6 p.p.), Nigeria (+6.2 p.p.) and Gabon (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Morocco (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest other cereals importing markets in Africa were Kenya ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +239.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -32.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 68%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Gabon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+18.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
