For the fifth consecutive year, the African copper chain market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw a notable expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Copper Chain Production in Africa
In value terms, copper chain production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 711%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of chain and parts thereof of copper were exported in Africa; shrinking by -44% compared with 2021. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 658%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper chain exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 223%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Morocco was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 75% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (8.5%). Uganda (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chain and parts thereof of copper. At the same time, Mauritius (+53.4%) and Uganda (+15.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +53.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-18.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Mauritius and Uganda increased by +40, +8.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest copper chain supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Mauritius ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 98% of total exports.
Mauritius, with a CAGR of +33.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 263%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Copper Chain Imports
Imports in Africa
Copper chain imports surged to X tons in 2022, rising by 15% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, copper chain imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 256%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Tunisia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Libya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 88% of total imports in 2022.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +95.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chain and parts thereof of copper in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 5.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 4.8% share.
In Tunisia, copper chain imports expanded at an average annual rate of +34.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-10.0% per year) and Botswana (+50.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -14.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 171%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
