Chalk Market Size in Africa

The African chalk market dropped rapidly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -37.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chalk production shrank significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Chalk exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 246% compared with the year before. In general, exports enjoyed a modest increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chalk exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) was the major exporter of chalks, creating 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing a 25% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chalk exports from Tunisia stood at +55.2%. At the same time, Egypt (+84.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +84.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-2.6%) and South Africa (-27.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia and Egypt increased by +65 and +25 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) emerged as the largest chalk supplier in Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 16% share.

In Tunisia, chalk exports expanded at an average annual rate of +52.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+87.1% per year) and South Africa (-18.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -34.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of chalks were imported in Africa; rising by 76% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chalk imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Senegal represented the main importer of chalks in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 30% of total imports in 2021. Benin (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cameroon (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 44% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+42.4%), Gabon (+24.8%), Benin (+24.0%) and Cameroon (+16.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2021. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.8%), Tunisia (-3.3%), Mauritius (-3.5%), Morocco (-15.5%) and South Africa (-20.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Benin (+12 p.p.), Senegal (+11 p.p.), Nigeria (+10 p.p.), Cameroon (+9.7 p.p.) and Gabon (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Morocco saw its share reduced by -12.5% and -25% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +37.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
