Cheese Market Size in Africa

The African cheese market rose markedly to $X in 2021, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

For the fifth year in a row, Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of cheese, which decreased by -9.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cheese exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the key exporter of cheese in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -8.4% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tunisia (-9.8%) and Morocco (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Morocco (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest cheese supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to -8.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+4.7% per year) and Morocco (-16.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of cheese decreased by -6.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cheese imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of cheese imports in 2021 were Libya (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together recording 56% of total import. Algeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by South Africa (6.2%). Mauritius (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +7.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Libya ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total imports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +8.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
