Tanzania (+25 p.p.), Gabon (+2.8 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Gabon ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +43.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 37% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 425%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gabon ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, chemical contraceptive preparations imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +87.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

At the same time, Mozambique (+34.6%), Zambia (+15.3%), Ghana (+13.7%), Kenya (+11.0%), Burkina Faso (+10.9%), Madagascar (+9.4%), Morocco (+7.5%), South Africa (+6.3%), Tanzania (+4.2%) and Algeria (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Uganda experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ethiopia (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+28 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.3 p.p.), Ghana (+2.3 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Uganda, Algeria and Ethiopia saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -2.7% and -7.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Nigeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 39% of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +49.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
