Somalia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sour cherry production, comprising approx. 50% of total volume. Moreover, sour cherry production in Somalia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Central African Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mali (X tons), with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Somalia totaled +2.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Central African Republic (+0.7% per year) and Mali (+2.3% per year).

In 2022, shipments abroad of sour cherries increased by 52% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 1,036%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sour cherry exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 882% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing a 7.5% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+29.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+6.3 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-8.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sour cherry supplier in Africa, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +28.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+18.7% per year) and Egypt (+15.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 338% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+21.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sour cherries increased by 229% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sour cherry imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Egypt dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sour cherries imports, with a CAGR of +68.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+13.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Egypt (+96 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sour cherries in Africa, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports.
In Egypt, sour cherry imports increased at an average annual rate of +43.3% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Egypt amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+16.1%).
