The African chick peas market totaled $X in 2022, surging by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Chick Peas Production in Africa
In value terms, chick peas production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of chick peas production was Ethiopia (X tons), comprising approx. 52% of total volume. Moreover, chick peas production in Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Sudan (X tons), with a 10% share.
In Ethiopia, chick peas production increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+2.2% per year) and Sudan (+21.1% per year).
The average chick peas yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 5.9% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 22%. The level of yield peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The chick peas harvested area fell to X ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 21%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Chick peas exports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 17% against the year before. In general, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, chick peas exports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Tanzania was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 64% of total exports. Sudan (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ethiopia (12%). Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sudan (+13.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ethiopia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+41 p.p.) and Sudan (+7.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-2.8 p.p.) and Ethiopia (-46 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest chick peas supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 16% share.
In Tanzania, chick peas exports expanded at an average annual rate of +15.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+13.6% per year) and Ethiopia (-7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Chick peas imports contracted to X tons in 2022, waning by -5.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chick peas imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Algeria (X tons) was the major importer of chick peas, mixing up 57% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Tunisia (6.4%) and Libya (6.2%). South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chick peas. At the same time, Morocco (+29.5%), Libya (+13.3%) and South Africa (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2022. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Libya, South Africa and Morocco increased by +4.3, +2.4 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chick peas in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 6.3% share.
In Algeria, chick peas imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-0.5% per year) and Libya (+10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
