Ethiopia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pimenta pepper production, accounting for 29% of total volume. Moreover, pimenta pepper production in Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), twofold. Benin (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 12% share.

In Ethiopia, pimenta pepper production expanded at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+1.0% per year) and Benin (+10.1% per year).

The average pimenta pepper yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 4.6%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of pimenta pepper were harvested in Africa; almost unchanged from 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pimenta pepper production attained the maximum at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, exports of pimenta pepper in Africa declined significantly to X tons, reducing by -51.7% on the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 164%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pimenta pepper exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +47.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Zambia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 31% of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 51% share of total exports.

Exports from Zambia increased at an average annual rate of +45.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+252.3%), Malawi (+6.6%) and South Africa (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +252.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-5.0%), Morocco (-6.7%) and Tunisia (-20.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+30 p.p.), Nigeria (+11 p.p.), Malawi (+4.2 p.p.) and South Africa (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zimbabwe, Morocco and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -4.1%, -8.9% and -45.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Zambia ($X), Morocco ($X) and Malawi ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 47% of total exports. South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +241.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 37% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper export price increased by +95.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Pimenta pepper imports contracted notably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -24.7% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. South Africa was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 43% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Tunisia (9.5%), Libya (6.6%), Nigeria (5.9%) and Egypt (5.8%). Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+45.2%), Morocco (+12.9%) and Egypt (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2022. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.1%) and Libya (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco increased by +13, +5.8 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest pimenta pepper importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Nigeria, Tunisia, Libya and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +57.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
