The African chili and pepper market rose notably to $X in 2022, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, the average yield of chilies and peppers (green) in Africa fell to X tons per ha, shrinking by -12.9% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 28% against the previous year. For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of chilies and peppers (green), which increased by 3.1% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +21.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 75%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Morocco prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest chili and pepper supplier in Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

In Morocco, chili and pepper exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco amounted to $X per ton.

Chili and pepper imports rose modestly to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 4.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +112.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
