The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X cubic meters, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Mozambique (X cubic meters), Swaziland (X cubic meters) and Gambia (X cubic meters) - together made up 7.6% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood chips and particles exports from South Africa stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Mozambique (+33.4%) and Swaziland (+27.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Gambia (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+14 p.p.), Mozambique (+3.4 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Gambia, with a 0.7% share.
In South Africa, wood chips and particles exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (+11.1% per year) and Gambia (-10.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of wood chips and particles were finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 209%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the one major importers of wood chips and particles, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood chips and particles imports, with a CAGR of +30.7% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +84 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in Africa.
