After three years of decline, overseas shipments of chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates increased by 159% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorates, bromates and iodates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 155% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 80% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9.2% share, followed by Senegal (5.1%). Morocco (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +40.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 83% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +53.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -27.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 135%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 47%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorates, bromates and iodates imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 76% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 4.5% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+27.1%), Nigeria (+10.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.3%) and Tunisia (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-9.4%) and Morocco (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.9 p.p.), Kenya (+2 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt and Morocco saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -8.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with an 8.2% share.

In South Africa, chlorates, bromates and iodates imports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+1.3% per year) and Kenya (+5.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -18.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
