In 2021, overseas shipments of chloride oxides and chloride hydroxides of copper and other metals were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chloride oxides of metal exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a dramatic slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 9.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), generating a 5.1% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -25.9% from 2012 to 2021. Zimbabwe (-9.8%), Egypt (-10.7%) and Kenya (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+4.2 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -8.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest chloride oxides of metal supplier in Africa, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 29% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -25.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (-5.1% per year) and Egypt (+8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -33.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+21.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of chloride oxides and chloride hydroxides of copper and other metals decreased by -7.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chloride oxides of metal imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 66% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cameroon (X tons), mixing up a 5.5% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chloride oxides of metal imports into South Africa stood at +28.4%. At the same time, Cameroon (+65.0%), Uganda (+53.7%), Nigeria (+45.8%), Angola (+32.2%), Tunisia (+22.0%), Algeria (+17.0%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +65.0% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+31 p.p.), Cameroon (+5.2 p.p.), Angola (+2 p.p.), Nigeria (+1.9 p.p.) and Uganda (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -3.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chloride oxides and chloride hydroxides of copper and other metals in Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by Cameroon, with a 7.7% share.
