Chlorides Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African chlorides market decreased by -1.6% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +62.7% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +75.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -12.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 102%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together constituting a 32% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chlorides exports from Egypt stood at +18.3%. At the same time, Angola (+31.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+19.8%), Tunisia (+7.8%) and South Africa (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +31.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +28 and +8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest chlorides supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +25.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+1.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) imported in Africa soared to X tons, jumping by 26% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), namely Angola, South Africa and Nigeria, represented more than third of total import. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together comprising a 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Ethiopia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - each resulted at a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chlorides importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Angola ($X), together accounting for 35% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Uganda, Algeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +21.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
