In value terms, chocolate bar with filling exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Egypt represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 68% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together held near 27% share of total exports. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+27.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-2.7%) and Namibia (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+9 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest chocolate bar with filling supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-2.9% per year) and Namibia (+4.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of chocolate bars with fillings in Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 49% on 2020. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +70.5% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, the largest chocolate bar with filling importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Angola, Djibouti, Sudan and Ghana, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +37.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
