Chromates Market Size in Africa

The African chromates market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chromates production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 5.7%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates, when their volume decreased by -0.8% to X tons. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +16.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chromates exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +54.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates increased by 18% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 58%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chromates imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 33% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together mixing up a 38% share of total imports. Malawi (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chromates imports into South Africa stood at +10.5%. At the same time, Algeria (+23.0%), Madagascar (+22.8%), Zambia (+20.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.5%), Kenya (+6.4%) and Malawi (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.0%), Egypt (-5.9%), Tanzania (-6.3%) and Sudan (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+21 p.p.), Algeria (+7.3 p.p.), Kenya (+7.1 p.p.), Zambia (+3.5 p.p.), Madagascar (+1.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-2.1 p.p.), Sudan (-3.6 p.p.) and Egypt (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +16.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+9.0% per year) and Egypt (-6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chromates import price increased by +69.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
