The African chromatograph market soared to $X in 2022, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Chromatograph Production in Africa
In value terms, chromatograph production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 112%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X units of chromatographs and electrophoresis instruments were exported in Africa; with a decrease of -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 211% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chromatograph exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of chromatographs and electrophoresis instruments, creating 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X units), generating a 23% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units), Angola (X units) and Senegal (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +21.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+29.9%), Senegal (+13.3%) and Angola (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Swaziland increased by +41 and +20 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest chromatograph supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +16.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+1.2% per year) and Swaziland (+1.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 224%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Chromatograph Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of chromatographs and electrophoresis instruments increased by 48% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chromatograph imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the key importer of chromatographs and electrophoresis instruments, making up 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units) and Algeria (X units), together achieving a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Uganda (X units), Tunisia (X units), Morocco (X units) and Libya (X units) - together made up 9.3% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -19.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+17.2%), Morocco (+15.1%), Uganda (+14.2%), Libya (+8.4%) and Tunisia (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-25.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+7.2 p.p.), Uganda (+3.1 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.5 p.p.), Morocco (+1.7 p.p.) and Libya (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -7.3% and -18.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest chromatograph importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 53% share of total imports.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -39.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 197%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+24.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
