In value terms, cider, perry and mead production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages increased by 50% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X litres, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages. At the same time, Ghana (+13.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Ghana increased by +11 and +2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cider, perry and mead supplier in Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

In South Africa, cider, perry and mead exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2021, increasing by 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Ghana totaled $X per litre.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.8%).

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages was finally on the rise to reach X litres after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana represented the main importer of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X litres, which was approx. 31% of total imports in 2021. Mozambique (X litres) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (9.8%), Togo (6.6%), Lesotho (6.3%) and Ghana (5.3%). Swaziland (X litres), Kenya (X litres), Tanzania (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres), South Africa (X litres), Malawi (X litres) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+46.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.6%), Malawi (+14.3%), Togo (+12.8%), Tanzania (+7.1%), Ghana (+6.5%), Kenya (+3.9%), Lesotho (+2.5%) and Swaziland (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-5.1%), Namibia (-9.5%) and South Africa (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+18 p.p.), Mozambique (+15 p.p.), Togo (+4.3 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-9.3 p.p.) and Namibia (-14.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cider, perry and mead importing markets in Africa were Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Namibia ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
