Cinnamon Market Size in Africa

The African cinnamon market amounted to $X in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -6.9% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cinnamon Production in Africa

In value terms, cinnamon production declined markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 243% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Madagascar (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), with a combined 91% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cinnamon yield in Africa reduced to X tons per ha, shrinking by -5.2% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 28%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cinnamon harvested area contracted modestly to X ha in 2022, which is down by -1.9% compared with 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the cinnamon harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Cinnamon Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of cinnamon (canella) were exported in Africa; waning by -14.9% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, cinnamon exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Madagascar was the main exporter of cinnamon (canella) in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Namibia (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cinnamon exports from Madagascar stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Tanzania (+52.5%) and Namibia (+36.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar, Tanzania and Namibia increased by +32, +14 and +4.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest cinnamon supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Madagascar, cinnamon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+43.4% per year) and Namibia (+17.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Cinnamon imports surged to X tons in 2022, jumping by 23% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cinnamon imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of cinnamon imports in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together finishing at 91% of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +22.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cinnamon importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Sudan ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports. Algeria, South Africa, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +30.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cinnamon import price increased by +63.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
