In value terms, citric acid exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Citric acid imports contracted to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -4.9% against 2020. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.3% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, citric acid imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the largest importers of citric acid and its salts and esters in 2021, resulting at approx. 23% and 19% of total imports, respectively. Algeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Nigeria (10%) and Swaziland (6.6%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

Algeria, Swaziland, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, Zimbabwe and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Swaziland, with a CAGR of +13.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
