The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of civil reaction engines increased by 2.4% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 174%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, civil reaction engine exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a precipitous decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 639% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 47% of total exports. Egypt (X units) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (13%), Namibia (6.3%) and Mozambique (4.7%). The following exporters - Malawi (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - together made up 6.3% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -18.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+39.1%), Malawi (+29.2%) and Angola (+23.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-19.1%), Namibia (-22.7%) and Tunisia (-53.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+38 p.p.), Egypt (+15 p.p.), Angola (+13 p.p.), Namibia (+4.2 p.p.), Malawi (+3.9 p.p.) and Mozambique (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-81.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest civil reaction engine supplier in Africa, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -16.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+14.4% per year) and Egypt (+10.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 187%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, civil reaction engine imports in Africa shrank notably to X units, waning by -53.1% compared with 2020. In general, imports recorded a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 307%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, civil reaction engine imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 228%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) represented the largest importer of civil reaction engines, generating 41% of total imports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Rwanda (9.9%), Algeria (8.3%) and Congo (4.5%). The following importers - Egypt (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) - each amounted to an 8.6% share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+85.0%), Rwanda (+59.3%), Congo (+53.0%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+18.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +85.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-12.4%) and South Africa (-32.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+38 p.p.), Rwanda (+9.9 p.p.), Algeria (+8.3 p.p.), Congo (+4.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.1 p.p.) and Egypt (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-45.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +81.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 92% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 266% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+16.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
