Spacecraft exports skyrocketed to X units in 2022, jumping by 619% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a mild increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spacecraft exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 440%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), creating a 17% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Kenya was also the fastest-growing in terms of the civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles exports, with a CAGR of +53.7% from 2012 to 2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kenya and Tunisia increased by +77 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest spacecraft supplier in Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -14.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+97.3% per year) and Kenya (+84.9% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -89.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 612%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Kenya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+20.3%).

For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles, which increased by 39% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 1,150%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, spacecraft imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 1,154%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units) represented the major importer of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles, making up 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units) and Egypt (X units), together mixing up a 35% share of total imports. Mozambique (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Morocco (X units) and Zambia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spacecraft imports into Nigeria stood at +29.7%. At the same time, Morocco (+46.6%), Egypt (+36.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+33.3%), South Africa (+21.8%) and Zambia (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles in Africa, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 12% share.

In Egypt, spacecraft imports increased at an average annual rate of +22.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+74.9% per year) and Nigeria (+31.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -46.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 408%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
