Cobalt Market Size in Africa

The African cobalt market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, waning by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a remarkable increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cobalt production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of cobalt exported in Africa shrank to X tons, declining by -12% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cobalt exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together amounting to 95% of total export.

Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cobalt. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) also remains the largest cobalt supplier in Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to +16.1%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 37%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Democratic Republic of the Congo.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to +15.2% per year.

Cobalt Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cobalt decreased by -38.7% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 821% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cobalt imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 855% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tunisia was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), achieving a 24% share of total imports. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cobalt imports into Tunisia stood at +27.1%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+103.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +103.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-21.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+52 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+24 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -34.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cobalt in Africa, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia amounted to +21.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-13.7% per year) and Zimbabwe (+86.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -46.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 8.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
