In 2022, the African cocoa powder market decreased by -0.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, cocoa powder production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cocoa powder (not sweetened), when their volume decreased by -6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 50%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cocoa powder exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 66%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X tons) was the largest exporter of cocoa powder (not sweetened), creating 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), making up a 30% share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cocoa powder (not sweetened) exports, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Ghana (+25 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-25.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest cocoa powder supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana totaled +14.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+1.1%).

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of cocoa powder (not sweetened) were imported in Africa; reducing by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cocoa powder imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Algeria represented the main importer of cocoa powder (not sweetened) in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Morocco (11%), South Africa (7.9%) and Tunisia (4.8%). The following importers - Libya (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each reached a 3.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +19.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cocoa powder importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +10.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) and Senegal ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
