Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production of growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), with a combined 67% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while fibres for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Africa reduced to X kg per ha, declining by -4.7% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reached the peak level at X kg per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The harvested area of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at X ha in 2022, approximately reflecting 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 5.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres contracted significantly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -19.3% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the largest exporter of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, creating 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together creating a 27% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each amounted to an 8.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre exports from Kenya stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Mozambique (+49.1%) and Tanzania (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.1% from 2012-2022. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+6.9 p.p.), Kenya (+6.8 p.p.) and Mozambique (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-6.8 p.p.) and Madagascar (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier in Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kenya stood at +8.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+17.1% per year) and Madagascar (-1.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -12.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 58%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the largest importers of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Africa, together generating 44% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took near 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +57.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 10% share.

In Morocco, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres expanded at an average annual rate of +58.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+3.2% per year) and South Africa (+6.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
