Coffee Extract Market Size in Africa

The African coffee extract market fell modestly to $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, when their volume decreased by -1.2% to X tons. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +52.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main exporters of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, together constituting 90% of total exports. Rwanda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +24.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest coffee extract supplier in Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, coffee extract exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (-0.7% per year) and Egypt (-3.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+17.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -7.3% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +28.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Libya (X tons) were the major importers of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, together mixing up 62% of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee extract imports into South Africa stood at +10.6%. At the same time, Benin (+20.1%), Algeria (+16.9%), Senegal (+15.2%), Morocco (+14.1%), Angola (+8.9%), Burkina Faso (+6.0%), Egypt (+5.8%), Tunisia (+3.2%) and Nigeria (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-1.5%) and Kenya (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+9 p.p.), Senegal (+4.3 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kenya (-1.7 p.p.), Nigeria (-3.4 p.p.) and Libya (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +6.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+4.8% per year) and Senegal (+11.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
