Green Coffee Market Size in Africa

The African green coffee market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, surging by 20% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -16.5% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Green Coffee Production in Africa

In value terms, green coffee production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Ethiopia (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together accounting for 72% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average green coffee yield contracted slightly to X kg per ha in 2022, dropping by -2.8% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the green coffee yield attained the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coffee (green) production in Africa was estimated at X ha, growing by 2.8% compared with the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 15%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of coffee (green) exported in Africa reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -7.2% against the previous year. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +67.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 60%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, green coffee exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Uganda was the key exporter of coffee (green) in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2022. Ethiopia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Kenya (8.1%), Tanzania (5.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.6%). The following exporters - Cameroon (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) - together made up 5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X), Uganda ($X) and Kenya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of +7.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of coffee (green) decreased by -0.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after five years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 12%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Algeria was the key importer of coffee (green) in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Egypt (11%), Tunisia (8.8%), Sudan (8%), South Africa (5.8%) and Libya (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green coffee imports into Algeria stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Libya (+6.3%), Tunisia (+2.4%), Egypt (+2.3%) and Morocco (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012-2022. Sudan and South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Algeria (+2.5 p.p.) and Libya (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-1.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 65% of total imports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +9.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
