In 2022, the African coffee substitutes market decreased by -1.4% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Coffee Substitutes Production in Africa
In value terms, coffee substitutes production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, coffee substitutes exports in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 29% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 99%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, coffee substitutes exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Tanzania represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 46% of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Burkina Faso (11%), Ghana (8.6%), South Africa (6.9%) and Rwanda (5.7%). Uganda (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee substitutes exports from Tanzania stood at +28.7%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+340.0%) and Ethiopia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +340.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.3%), Ghana (-2.6%), Rwanda (-3.6%) and Uganda (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Burkina Faso increased by +40 and +11 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest coffee substitutes supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ethiopia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 10% share.
In Tanzania, coffee substitutes exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ethiopia (+1.1% per year) and South Africa (-1.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coffee substitutes export price increased by +100.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+17.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of coffee substitutes containing coffee increased by 3.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 160% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coffee substitutes imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 97%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) represented roughly 42% of total imports in 2022. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Somalia (7.6%), Rwanda (7.6%), Uganda (6.2%) and South Sudan (5.9%). Botswana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Sudan (with a CAGR of +51.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Namibia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee substitutes containing coffee in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 8.7% share.
In Namibia, coffee substitutes imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+31.5% per year) and Senegal (+27.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
