The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 40%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.8% from 2012-2022. Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+8 p.p.), Tanzania (+6.3 p.p.), Swaziland (+3 p.p.), Malawi (+2.7 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Zimbabwe (-1.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-17.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported compounds with other nitrogen function (excluding isocyanates) in Africa, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 5% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 3.5% share.
In South Africa, compounds with other nitrogen function imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+22.9% per year) and Tanzania (+11.7% per year).
