Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof increased by 8.1% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporter of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (8.3%). The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - each recorded a 3.2% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -12.6% from 2012 to 2021. Cameroon (-2.4%), Morocco (-3.6%), Nigeria (-7.1%) and Tunisia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco and Tunisia increased by +11 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest computing machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6% share.

In South Africa, computing machinery exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-9.0% per year) and Morocco (-2.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, computing machinery export price increased by +13.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof were imported in Africa; picking up by 12% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importers of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in 2021, recording near 26% and 17% of total imports, respectively. Morocco (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7% share, followed by Algeria (6.1%) and Ghana (4.5%). The following importers - Kenya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +1.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in Africa, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+1.1% per year) and Morocco (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 1,037% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
