After two years of growth, the African concentrated orange juice market decreased by -1.8% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Concentrated Orange Juice Production in Africa

In value terms, concentrated orange juice production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 19%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of concentrated orange juice was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of concentrated orange juice, creating 62% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+54.2%), Senegal (+51.7%), Tanzania (+28.9%) and Morocco (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-7.9%) and Ghana (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania increased by +8.3, +4.5, +4.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest concentrated orange juice supplier in Africa, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 3.5% share.

In South Africa, concentrated orange juice exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-4.2% per year) and Morocco (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 45% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Concentrated Orange Juice Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of concentrated orange juice imported in Africa totaled X tons, almost unchanged from the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of concentrated orange juice imports in 2021 were Botswana (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Libya (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together reaching 76% of total import. Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mauritania (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 40% of total imports. These countries were followed by Botswana, Swaziland, Somalia, Libya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Mauritania, Mozambique and Lesotho, which together accounted for a further 38%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritania, with a CAGR of +28.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
