In value terms, South Africa ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -11.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 28%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Libya represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 41% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritania (X tons) and Gambia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 23% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Benin (X tons), Togo (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Libya decreased at an average annual rate of -5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+28.9%), Burkina Faso (+20.9%), Sierra Leone (+15.4%), Ghana (+12.3%), Mauritania (+4.5%) and Somalia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012-2021. Gambia and Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (-1.1%), Benin (-2.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (-7.4%) and Djibouti (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Somalia increased by +8, +5.3, +2.5, +2.2, +2, +2 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported condensed or evaporated milk (unsweetened) in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritania, with a 6.6% share.

In Libya, unsweetened condensed and evaporated milk imports plunged by an average annual rate of -5.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+12.8% per year) and Mauritania (+2.2% per year).
